About Jamie

headshot.jpg

Jamie Bates is a ceramic artist and educator whose work explores identity and sexuality, and the intersections of psychology, witchcraft, and mythology. Their sculptures serve as self-portraits, capturing the complexities of the human condition through scale, composition, and surface. Drawing from Jungian psychology and ancient archetypes, Bates challenges dominant narratives while offering a deeply personal yet universally resonant perspective.

They hold an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Kansas and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Central Missouri. Jamie is currently an Associate Professor of Ceramics at the University of Oklahoma. Beyond the university classroom, they have participated in prestigious residencies and taught workshops at many prestigious arts institutions across the US.

Bates’ work has been exhibited widely in national and international galleries, with solo and group exhibitions spanning major contemporary venues. They have been recognized with numerous awards and grants, including funding for research-based projects that explore the role of art in processing collective trauma. Their work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly, Hi-Fructose, and other publications, as well as podcasts and panel discussions on contemporary ceramics and artistic censorship.
